“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.” Swiss-American Psychiatrist, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross is absolutely right, everyone does sparkle and shine. However, sometimes an overwhelming darkness sets in and that luminosity is harder to see. As a Psychology major, it is my intent to pursue a career path to help those struggling in the shadows to find their inner light. Because it frequently cannot be seen, mental illness has occasionally taken a backseat to other diseases. As someone who has dealt with the stress, struggle, and stigma of an eating disorder, it has become my passion to ensure that I dedicate my life to helping those individuals whose biggest conflict is often found not out in the world, but staring back at them in the mirror. Finding stability is difficult enough in this ever-changing world, and when someone can’t even count on themselves, the challenge increases ten-fold. I am determined to completely dedicate my professional career to making sure that I can help as many people navigate through the occasional darkness that infiltrates the mind and to bring them back into the sunlight. To be a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign would mean being at an institution that could help me help others. It would open invaluable opportunities for me to move forward in my quest to improve the lives of our fellow man. Many people find themselves occasionally shrouded in a world that seems black as night, but it is my purpose in life to take these people by the hand and bring out their inner light, and before they know it, they could be brighter than the sun. Please help! topic: One essay of no more than 300 words is required in the application. Explain your motivation to transfer from your current/previous institution and how your academic interests and/or professional goals will be fulfilled in your intended program of study (I'm at 298 words). I'm not feeling super confident. Let me know if you think I should scrap the whole thing. Edit: To answer the question, it was requited for UIUC, not sure about other schools. Thanks for the advice, everyone!... Read More »
